The Gamma Knife is used to treat certain benign and malignant brain tumours, certain types of brain vascular malformations, and certain functional neurological disorders.

For the treatment to be efficacious, the legion must not be too voluminous (in general, less than 3 cm in diameter).
Treatment by Gamma Knife can be an alternative to a risky surgical operation or constitute a complementary treatment to another treatment.
